Breathing brings forth the life force.

Five thousand years ago, the Valley of Indus (Iran, Afghanistan, Western India) supported a thriving civilization with advanced technologies of roads, sewer systems, running water, communal pools, and use of metals, all based upon focused breathing.

They had no wars or internal strife. The Chinese adopted their system in the year 3,000 BC to become known as “yoga.” Seven books of the Chinese Tao focus entirely on breathing.

Yoga is one of the most popular and fastest-growing activities in the world. The cornerstone of yoga is slow deep breathing.

Breathing paves the way for inner peace.

Mindful breathing has been taught and emphasized for thousands of years as the key means to Inner Peace.

Current leaders – such as the Dalai Lama, Eckhart Tolle, Jack Kornfield, Thich Nhat Hanh, Deepak Chopra, Thomas Merton, Herbert Benson, MD – endorse breathing.

The world religions of Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism all teach the power of the spirit in our breath. And Yoga, Qi Gong, Thai Chi, and other forms of meditation practice breathing.

The stones of our breath pave the path to our inner peace. No step is possible without mindful breathing.

With practice, you can prove that each inhaled breath provides fresh energy, and each exhaled breath releases old “stale” energy.

Why is breathing not a central part of Western Culture?

From the beginning, Western Religions chose to de-emphasize or ignore breathing and heavily influenced western culture to believe that breathing was not Biblical and too simple to be effective.

Despite evidence to the contrary, most westerners follow the belief that focused breathing is sacrilegious. My Doctoral Thesis demonstrated that the words “Breath” and the “Breath of God” occur throughout the Bible, especially when you realize that in the ancient Aramaic language of the time, “Spirit,” “Breath,” and “Word” had the same meaning.

That shared meaning occurs in Islam and the Eastern religions.

How We Breathe Matters

Current science has shown that the power of breathing and breath therapy is real and indisputable.

Medical science is just now including breathing techniques as a key part of healing and recovery. I will share with you what science has determined to be the “Perfect Breath.”

No matter the approach to stress-anxiety management, no lasting change will occur unless you include mindful breathing.
